Iraqis buy helicopters to safeguard transmission infrastructure

BAGHDAD, IRAQ - Iraq's Electricity Ministry will purchase helicopters for the security of its infrastructure and to transport technicians and others more quickly.

The Al Dawa newspaper reports Iraq's air force has shown Electricity Minister Karim Wahid Hasan models of helicopters available.

Iraq still faces regular attacks on workers, power lines, power plants and transmission towers. This has been reduced lately but remains a problem in continuing and increasing the amount of electricity to Iraq's citizens, industry and oil sector.

The ministry said the helicopters would give it quicker access to scheduled and emergency repairs, as well as provide wider coverage for securing the infrastructure.
