Four new Indian nuclear power plants to be operational in 2009

INDIA - India is looking forward to start four nuclear power plants which will add 1660 MW to the national energy basket, according to the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

The AEC expects two plants in Rajasthan and one plant in Kaiga to be operational in 2009. The Kudankulam power plant may also become operational in this year.

Currently, nuclear power constitutes only three per cent of the total electricity generated in the country. However, the Indo-US civil nuclear deal will help speed up atomic power generation in the country, reported Projects Today.
