Aside from dissolved gas analysis, fluids can be analyzed for certain chemical, physical and electrical properties that they should possess. This type of testing is usually referred to as oil quality testing. Oil qualityis assessed by determining the presence of harmful contaminants or degradation products of the fluid or electrical apparatus itself. There are several objectives design engineers are trying to achieve when they fill electrical equipment with dielectric fluids. The primary function of dielectric fluid in transformers is to transfer heat. Secondary functions are to electrically insulate the components and to quench an arc if it should occur.
