PQube Power Qualiy Analyzer & Power Recorder

Once in a while you come across a product that just makes sense. So much sense that you wonder why no-one came up with it before. The PQube is exactly that product.

At its core the PQube is a power quality monitor and power recorder. Sampling at 256 samples per cycle on all channels (voltage & current) it records power quality data (like sags, swells, fast transients, harmonics, flicker, unbalance, etc) to a removable 2Gig SD memory card. Pretty cool.

But it's also a lot more than that. It's a power consumption recorder, peak demand monitor, carbon emissions logger, frequency logger, power factor meter and a whole lot more besides. You can extend it's capabilities with analog/digital inputs, relay output, dual temperature/humidity sensor and more.

And even though it can do each of those things and do them well, its approach to doing them is unconventional with ease of use as it design theme.

A Unique Approach

The PQube doesn't require software for setup or for reporting. Setup is done either by changing settings in the configuration file on the SD card or – if you splash for Ethernet module – simply by sending the PQube an email!

Reporting is just as easy - the PQube stores its data in a number of popular ready-to-use formats including JPG images, Excel spreadsheets, PQDIF files, and HTML web pages. And if you do want to work with third party software applications, you can use the automatically generated XML and IEEE standards-compliant PQDIFF formats.

Secondly, it's unconventional because it doesn't require a lot of setup and configuration. The electrical system and voltage is self detecting and all thresholds needed to do a power quality study are pre-set and based on generally accepted power quality standards.

Lastly, at approximately the size of a few iPhone's stacked on top of each other it's about the smallest device you'll see in this product space. The PQube system is DIN Rail mounted and comprises the main analyzer plus one or more snap-together modules – there's one for external CTs, one for pass-through CTs, one for AC power supply and one is the powerful Ethernet module which includes a built-in web server with email reporting & alerting. Because it's totally modular, you can mix and match options that you want without paying for capabilities you don't.

Power Monitoring

The PQube is full-loaded ANSI C12 certified billing-grade power meter with lots of useful features like standard MODBUS RS-485 communications and optional Ethernet connectivity with built-in web server and inbound/outbound email. In addition, the unit features Zigbee Wireless and USB communications as well.

Power Quality Analyzer

As a power quality analyzer, the PQube is like a digital camera for your power system. It monitors voltage dips, swells and interruptions, over/under frequency, 1 micro-second high-frequency impulse detection, harmonics, flicker … all with detailed event and trend reporting.

Summary

Overall, this neat little box serves up everything most customers will need in an affordable, compact, tremendously well thought-out power monitor. It's been on the market since the spring of 2009 and because of its ease of use and well-thought out nature (not to mention size and price) it's already starting to define itself as the product of choice in the industrial, commercial and utility markets.
