| RELIABLE AND CONVENIENT POWER TO REMOTE APPLICATIONS DIRECT FROM HV TRANSMISSION LINES!
Station Service Voltage Transformers (SSVTs) from Kuhlman Electric Corporation
A station service voltage transformer (SSVT) provides a convenient and cost-effective solution for serving small power and/or metering and relaying requirements directly from a transmission line to provide low voltage control power for substations, cell tower installations and switching stations by tapping directly from the high voltage transmission line.
The SSVT can reduce your total supply chain costs by eliminating the need of installing a dedicated distribution feeder while improving your system reliability. Kuhlman SSVTs are fully insulated up to 230 kV with power performance up to 250 kVA. This combination allows direct connection to the high voltage transmission line in an economical, conveniently installed, pedestal mounted transformer. The transformation is directly from the high voltage primary down to the low voltage output that supplies 125/250 VAC power (or up to 600 VAC, if specified) to drive lighting loads, motor loads and various instrumentation. Unique to the design of the SSVT is the ability to provide power and metering/relaying simultaneously, with the optional metering windings available.
SWITCHING STATION APPLICATION - Many utilities maintain switching stations for interconnection of several lines, and these generally do not have low voltage control power available inside the station. Instead of relying on distribution feeders, the SSVT is pedestal-mounted with the primary tied to the transmission line and the secondary connected to the station power panel. This process eliminates the need for a dedicated distribution feeder and improves substation reliability with the direct connection.
REMOTE CELL TOWER SITE APPLICATION With the rapidly expanding cellular telephone industry, the need exists to reach all possible points with clear signals for communications. Given the limited distances that cell signals can be transmitted, it is often required to locate towers in many remote locations to repeat the transmissions. If the site is not near distribution feeders for secondary voltage supply but is located next to transmission line right of ways, a tap can be taken from the transmission line to the SSVT to supply power. In many cases installation is directly on the transmission tower -; Avoid costs of tower permits by using existing towers! This allows the user advantage of power purchases at transmission level.
SUBSTATION POWER APPLICATION In some transmission substations, power transformers are typically equipped with tertiary windings that supply distribution transformers with primary voltages to provide power for the substation. For installations where the power transformers do not have tertiary windings power must be supplied by alternate means. The SSVT can be used in both of these installations by tapping directly into the more reliable power source from transmission bus for improved reliability. This allows the tertiary of the main power transformer to be uploaded, thereby improving power quality.
TRANSMISSION LINE LIGHTING APPLICATION Used to power aircraft clearance lighting on transmission towers crossing a river for security and safety purposes. Our SSVT has been mounted on towers and used to provide lighting power up on the tower. Self contained fusing and mounting format for quicker installation. Reduced total installed cost for application; Limited installation to a compact space up near transmission line.
TRANSMISSION SWITCH AUTOMATION APPLICATION In order to improve service to a substation feeding a customer from a 69 kV line via a radial tap, switches were automated to sectionalize the line in case of fault. No distribution feeder was available nearby for access to low voltage control power. Our SSVT was used to supply the SCADA RTU, radio, and motor-operated switches with control power. By supplying a 69 kV SSVT with 10 kVA power rating with a metering winding, the user was able to get both control power and tap voltage indication for monitoring circuits for SCADA with much greater reliability.
