Manitoba Metis Federation and Manitoba Hydro Sign Employment Agreement

Winnipeg, MB --Manitoba Metis Federation President, David Chartrand and Manitoba Hydro President and CEO, Bob Brennan signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) today, establishing an Employment Working Group (EWG) intended to support, develop, and increase Metis recruitment, training, employment and business initiatives within the utility. The Honourable Minister Tim Sale also attended the signing of the MOU.

The Manitoba Metis Federation and Manitoba Hydro acknowledge the considerable contribution that can be made to Hydro, its customers, and all Manitoba, by the involvement of the Metis Nation in Hydro recruitment, training, employment and business initiatives.

The EWG will consist of representatives appointed by Manitoba Hydro and the Manitoba MИtis Federation. Among its mandated tasks, the EWG will provide advice and exchange information between both parties. The group will also develop, implement and recommend processes and actions to eliminate systemic barriers to employment for the MИtis as one of Manitoba's Aboriginal peoples.

"Our vision for current and future hydroelectric development in Manitoba includes providing citizens with greater access to new and existing opportunities," said Tim Sale, Minister of Energy, Science and Technology, and Minister responsible for Manitoba Hydro. "Today's agreement with the MMF is a first step in ensuring Metis People are able to contribute their skills to and benefit from the success of Hydro."

Manitoba Metis Federation President David Chartrand was pleased with today's signing. President Chartrand described this event as "one of several proactive initiatives we are pursuing with Hydro to ensure the Metis People are receiving fair and equal access to employment and business opportunities. We are also encouraged by these steps in enhancing the relationship between Hydro and the Metis Nation that will address employment issues and aspirations for the Metis people."

The Honourable Oscar Lathlin, Manitoba Minister of Aboriginal and Northern Affairs called the agreement an important step forward in building relationships between Manitoba Hydro and the MMF.

Hydro President and CEO Bob Brennan said "One of the primary goals at Manitoba Hydro is to strengthen relationships with Aboriginal peoples and this new initiative with the Metis people is in keeping with that philosophy. A critical component of a company's competitive advantage lies with the strength and capabilities of its employees. Manitoba Hydro is embracing this philosophy by supporting workplace diversity as it encourages new ways of thinking. A rapidly increasing Aboriginal labour force offers excellent opportunities to recruit talented Aboriginal employees at various levels throughout the Corporation."
