Solar Energy Studies Developed For Midwest

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas -- Black & Veatch announced that it has completed four case studies in four Midwestern states for successful application of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (Iowa DNR).

The results of the studies, which were funded by the Department of Energy, will serve as the foundation to promote the future development of renewable and clean solar energy to local governments and communities throughout the Midwest.

The studies provide new and unique information on the reliability and viability of PV systems, verify the amount of electricity produced by each system and dispel the notion that solar energy is costly and unattractive. Black & Veatch investigated PV installations for residential electricity, ranch water pumping, high schools and wastewater pond aeration. Data collected for the case studies was obtained from PV systems installed in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska.

"Iowa is pleased to offer these case studies for professionals and consumers interested in installing solar PV systems in the Midwest," said Iowa DNR Energy Analyst Jennifer Moehlmann. "We hope they will help prove that solar energy can be a viable option. The case studies are available at http://www.state.ia.us/dnr/energy/programs/solar/index.htm.

In an effort to become better stewards of the environment, many cities around the United States have invested in solar power as an alternative to coal, oil and nuclear sources. Among its many advantages is freedom from emissions, including carbon dioxide. Solar PV technology has become immensely popular in recent years because of cost reductions due to technology development, government buy-down programs and tax incentives.

"Black & Veatch is at the forefront of the solar energy industry providing clients with complete renewable energy solutions," said Black & Veatch Project Manager Anand Pattani. "These one-of-a-kind studies demonstrate our flexible and customizable capabilities."
