Design Engineer - Electrical/Traction Power

Signals/Electrical/Communications Department
Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer - Traction Power, you will be responsible for providing engineering design expertise in relation to engineering work associated with the Commission's electrical and traction power systems. Your duties will include: preparing engineering calculations, designs and specifications for planned and emergency work; tracking all assigned engineering deliverables; solving design problems using standard engineering practices, procedures and/or modifications; checking and approving electrical and traction power designs prepared by external consultants or TTC design staff, and assisting in the overall co-ordination of projects conducted by external consultants; testing and commissioning new electrical and traction power systems; checking and approving drawings for technical content, and signing same in accordance with Professional Engineers of Ontario regulations. In addition, you will provide engineering support and guidance to operational maintenance staff on a 24-hour basis, and perform related duties as assigned. Annual Salary Range: $61,425 - $76,804

Skills/Knowledge/Experience
You require sound knowledge of electrical engineering principles, methods and practices. You must have a sound knowledge of electrical and traction power design principles, equipment and systems used by the Commission. You must have a good working knowledge of electronic testing equipment, transformers, switchgear, emergency power supplies, and light and traction power distribution/generation systems and associated equipment maintained and rehabilitated by the S/E/C Department. You must possess sound judgement and well developed technical, analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal communication and engineering report-writing skills. You must be computer literate, with a strong knowledge of personal computers and computerized applications related to the work, including Intergraph MicroStation CADD systems and operations. You must have a strong knowledge of applicable electrical codes/practices/standards, with the emphasis on the energy billing and power monitoring systems, the Commission's electrical and traction power systems and associated electrical/electronic equipment as well as the various functions carried out by the Signals/Electrical/ Communications Department. These abilities would normally be acquired by obtaining a degree in Electrical Engineering or the equivalent, combined with several years of directly related work experience and registration with the Professional Engineers of Ontario.
