Power Switchgear - Circuit Breaker Handbook Volume 1
Power switchgear is located on both the high voltage, and the low voltage side of large electrical transformers. It is located on the low voltage side of transformers in distribution substations, in what is called a Power Distribution Center (PDC). Inside this building are typically smaller, medium-voltage (~15kV) circuit breakers feeding the distribution system. Also contained inside these Power Control Centers are various relays, meters, and other communication equipment allowing for intelligent control of the circuit breaker and substation.
This circuit breaker equipment, which when used for lower voltages may be entirely enclosed within a building. For transmission (high voltage) levels over 66 kV, often circuit breakers will be mounted outdoor and insulated by air, though this requires a large amount of space. A compact, though more costly type of this equipment is "gas insulated power switchgear" (GIS), where the conductors and circuit breakers are insulated by pressurized sulfur hexafluoride gas.
At small substations, switches may be manually operated, but at important switching stations on the transmission network all devices have motor operators to allow for remote control.
Our handbook discusses the design, application, safety, and maintenance of this equipment. These are the most important aspects discussed in our technical handbook by the Electricity Forum -- giving electrical engineers and contractors the vital information they need to select and specify circuit breaker and control equipment. A more detailed section on proper maintenance and testing techniques is included. This 100+ page handbook is packed with interesting and educational information that will help you in practical ways in your electrical profession.
